Open School of Music

The aim of the Open School of Music is to foster a love and life-long learning experience in music. Our integrated and dynamic program runs sequentially from early childhood classes through to university entrance. Throughout, there is the possibility for students to work at a variety of different levels depending on their interests and skills.

Our program is very much a creative laboratory where students are encouraged to question and to be creative – at all times guided by our experienced and inspiring artist teachers. The program offers aspiring musicians of the future a totally supportive and nurturing social environment in which they can interact with their peers and rub shoulders with the world of professional music-making.

Supported by the ACT Government.

Important message from The Convener:

Last year, 2012, saw various changes at the School of Music. While there will be a range of on-going developments for the Open School in 2013, we  would like to give you an update on our current programs for 2013.

We are still in discussions with artsACT regarding how best to align the Open School with the newly developing School of Music with its broader and more inclusive agenda, while also developing a closer match with the new ACT Government Arts Policy Framework (http://www.arts.act.gov.au/functions/news_and_events/items/act_arts_policy_framework ).

Currently we are largely planning for 'business-as-usual' in the first Semester of 2013, while the new tertiary curriculum unfolds and we continue talks with our many stakeholders. All programs will continue for current users: Type 1, Music for Secondary Schools, Music after Schools, Fridays@SoM, Music Engagement Program, and the Early Childhood Music Program. Some programs may have a limited intake of new students for the beginning of 2013, while we consider their on-going operation. We will keep you updated in the first Semester. We would like to thank parents and students who have written to us with feedback and suggestions and welcome your comments at any time.

Auditions

Students are carefully selected through a process of auditions and interviews which varies according to the age and the musical training of the applicants.

Music After School: Instrumental and Vocal Program
Fridays @ ANU School of Music
Ainslie Strings Program

Auditions for the Instrumental and Vocal Program, Ainslie Strings Program, and Fridays @ ANU School of Music are held at the end of each semester. Auditions for all other OSM programs are held at the end of each academic year (Early Childhood Music excluded – no audition required).

Beginners are asked to listen to and sing back different pitches, imitate a clapped rhythm and sing a tune. For applicants with previous musical training, their level of development is assessed in relation to their age and length of time they have been learning the instrument. Applicants for OSM programs will be required to prepare two contrasting pieces and may be asked to play scales (at the level of their AMEB Performance grade or equivalent) and sight-read a short section of written music supplied by the panel.

At the conclusion of the audition, staff will interview the applicants to gauge the extent of their interest and enthusiasm for music.

Audition requirements for Music for Colleges – Type 1

Type 1 Jazz (all instruments except Drums) are as follows:
Perform/sing the melody and improvise over a few choruses of one Jazz Standard and One 12 Bar Blues; undergo a brief scale, sight-reading, and aural test; and undergo a brief interview to ascertain the applicant’s aptitude and commitment to study Jazz.

Type 1 Jazz Drummers will need to demonstrate the following: a Swing Jazz Feel reading left hand coordination passages from the book Syncopation by Ted Reed; 4 Latin Drum Styles - Bossa Nova, Samba, Mambo and Naningo; Rudiments - Single Stroke Roll, Double Stroke Roll, Parradiddle, Five Stroke Roll, and a Buzz Roll; undergo a sight reading test, an aural test and a brief interview to ascertain the applicant’s aptitude and commitment to study Jazz. Drummers may also be asked to perform a jazz standard with a staff member to demonstrate their accompaniment skills, no drum solo required

Type 1 Classical are as follows:
Students auditioning for Type 1 Classical will be required to prepare 2 contrasting pieces to be playe WITH an accompaist* where relevent, and may be asked to play scales and sight read a short piece.

It is expected that applicants for the Music for Colleges - Type 1 Classical program are at a musical proficiency equivalent to at least AMEB Grade 7 (Performance) and AMEB Grade 4 (Theory/Musicianship).

*The accompanist is to be supplied by, and at the expense of, the applicant. Please click here for a list of accompanists available at the ANU School of Music

Successful applicants for all programs enrol for one semester at a time and re-enrolment is subject to satisfactory attendance and progress as determined by the relevant area.

Instrument Hire

It is expected that children will have their own instruments. The School of Music does, however, have a limited number of small sized violins and cellos for hire. Contact the Library on 6125 5794 for more information.

The Young Music Society also has some instruments for hire during term time and can be
contacted directly on 6161 3782.

Library Access

All Open School of Music students may apply for a student card, which entitles them to borrowing rights at the School’s comprehensive specialist music library

Student Progress

The musical development and technical progress of individual students is of utmost importance to the staff.

Depending on the area, student progress is monitored in a variety of ways. These include the weekly lessons, regular individual performances and technical assessments. Instrumental students are encouraged to develop confidence and enjoyment in performing.

Supervision

The University’s policy on “Children within the Workplace” states that “in instances where a child or adolescent person is brought to the workplace by their parent or other adult, the de facto supervisor is the parent or other adult. This is an important part of minimizing the risk to the child and every effort should be made by his/her supervisor to maintain control of the child’s behaviour and location while on campus to minimise risk to the safety or health of the child.

The University cannot provide child-minding arrangements for students. Students visiting the School of Music must be properly supervised before and after their classes. Students should arrive at their designated music room at the scheduled start time of their class and be collected immediately after the scheduled finish time. Students and supervisors should also remain aware that the School of Music is an educational institution where students and teachers are undertaking serious study, and ensure students behave appropriately.
